Out on the Bourbon Trail: Woodford Reserve

May 29th, 2009

Thursday was Day 1 of furlough-cation. As John Mason would say Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-burrrrrrrbin!

We hit up Woodford Reserve, a brand of premium small batch bourbon whiskey made in the Labrot & Graham’s Old Oscar Pepper Distillery.

The Nashville Blues

May 28th, 2009

Tomorrow AM starts my furlough-cation to Nashville via Heaven Hill via Maker’s Mark via Woodford Reserve.

The plan was bourbon then seeing two, count ‘em, two Chuck Mead shows. His new record dropped recently with good reviews. Enjoy the music, y’all.

I love Brownies

May 12th, 2009

The other day I was editing my new wedding portfolio and that turned into me playing with some of my old camera’s. How do you force yourself to edit in nice light? I’ve got a few Kodak Brownies and decided to use it to make some photos of the cats. These were shot through a Brownie Hawkeye. After chasing the cats around some nice light I left my gear laying about and decided to find my Mamiya 645, because the Brownie viewfinder is way to small. Then I spent an hour in the basement finding my old film gear, rediscovering it, playing with it. Even going through a box of 8-tracks. When my wife came home and there were two cameras laying on the bed. In any other house this might be seen as creepy.

This “Through The Viewfinder,” or TTV technique, has been done many times by numerous photographers, there’s a flickr group, numerous, numerous blogs, but my most recent favorites were done by Chip Litherland. I planned on doing a series this summer like this, now I just need to spend some time in the basement to find the right gear.

The new black

May 4th, 2009

“Is out of focus the new black?”
This blog post has been on my mind lately, and really because of the post below it about self worth valuing your work, by Michael Rubenstein.

I recently lost a bid because of the $$$ and not the quality of the work. So instead I got to go drink copious Mint Juleps at Arlington Park and catch the Kentucky Derby with friends.

As Michael points out some times you gonna stand your ground and value yourself. If you take a job for under market prices why would they pay you or anyone more next time? Brian Valentin and I were talking about something similar after seeing the Thermals last week. We’ve seen a lot of our friends lose jobs, but feel free. There’s so much you can’t control. Focus on getting better not getting ahead. Let yourself go. Be smart. Value yourself. Take Chances. Love. Embrace a failure. Move. Drink. Rock.

I looked my fear in the eyes!
Looked at the water below!
I knew I could love or live!
I let it go!
