IPPA Awards

April 25th, 2010

I was lucky enough to score some awards this weekend at the annual Illinois Press Photographers Association convention held in St. Louis, MO. I feel honored to have placed in the photographer of the year category behind Will DeShazer, first, and Scott Strazzante, second place. Will and Scott are some of my favorite people and and both great visual storytellers.

We had some amazing judges in Liz O. Baylen, David Eulitt, and Josh Meltzer. We also were lucky enough to have Erik Lunsford perform some stand-up comedy and show some photos. I always love getting so spend a few days with people who are passionate about making pictures and communing with a bunch of my friends. I think my favorite moment was when Liz said, “This photographer has some real purposeful seeing.” They were debating my portfolio and I almost had a heart attack.

I am so blessed. Thanks everyone who helped out this weekend. Much PJ love.

Year of the Cat

December 15th, 2009

As the year wraps up everyone makes lists. I’ve been digging SeƱor Strazzante’s 2009 photo roundup, the Big Picture Blog, the Denver Post has great stuff, and I’m sure there will be many, many more.

I have friends that always complain about people sending him photos of their children, so my wife decided to make him a calendar of our cats. She asked me to come up with my favorite 12 photos. So here’s my 2009 year in cats.

IPPA 2009 convention

March 24th, 2009

This year a gaggle of button pushers converged on Madison, WI, for the Illinois Press Photographers Association’s “Best of Photojournalism” contest. For a few moments we could lose ourselves in images, conversation, beer, and light. We all know the serious reality facing us this year, but it was really nice to leave it all behind and recharge. Even thought I’ve seen Lisa Krantz’s amazing project from Helotes, TX, Cowboys and Cul-de-Sacs before is blew my mind. On the way home someone used the word “epic.”
